Swimming is an essential life skill that everyone should learn, regardless of their age. Unfortunately, many adults never learned how to swim when they were younger and may feel too intimidated to start now. In South Africa, there are many adults who have never had the opportunity to learn to swim due to lack of access to swimming facilities as children. As a result, there are many adults who are terrified of water and the thought of having swimming lessons can be a very scary experience. In this blog post, we’ll explore what adults learning to swim can expect, especially in the South African context.

There are many reasons why adults should learn to swim.

Overcoming Fear
For many adults who have never learned to swim, the fear of water can be overwhelming. However, with the right instruction and guidance, it is possible to overcome this fear. Adult learners can expect to work with a qualified swimming instructor who will help them feel comfortable and safe in the water. The instructor will work with the adult learner at their own pace and help them gradually build their confidence in the water.

Breaking Bad Habits
Adults who have developed a fear of water may have developed bad habits that need to be addressed when learning to swim. For example, some adults may be accustomed to holding their breath or keeping their head above water, which can hinder their ability to learn how to swim efficiently. A qualified swimming instructor can help the adult learner break these bad habits and develop new, more effective swimming techniques.

Immediate Results
One of the advantages of teaching adults to swim is that they are typically able to listen to instructions and follow them immediately. This means that adult learners can often make progress quickly and see immediate results. At Easy2Swim, we have found that many adults who have never swum before are able to start swimming in their first lesson.

Patience and Practice
While adults may be able to follow instructions and make progress quickly, it is important to remember that learning to swim still requires patience and practice. It is unlikely that an adult learner will become a proficient swimmer overnight, and it may take several lessons and plenty of practice to master this skill. However, with the right instruction and guidance, adults can learn to swim and enjoy all the benefits that come with this valuable life skill.

Risk of Drowning
Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death among children, and most drowning incidents occur in residential pools. As a parent, it’s your responsibility to ensure that your children are safe around water, and that means being able to jump in and help them if they get into difficulty. If you don’t know how to swim, you may not be able to assist your child in an emergency, which could be devastating.
By learning to swim, you’ll be able to provide your children with an extra layer of protection around water. You’ll be able to keep a watchful eye on them and jump in if they need help. This can give you peace of mind and help you feel more confident when your children are playing near water.

Health and Fitness
Swimming is a great way to stay active and improve overall health and fitness. Unlike many other forms of exercise, swimming is low impact and easy on the joints, making it a great option for individuals who may have joint pain or other limitations. Swimming is also an excellent cardiovascular workout and can help improve muscle tone and endurance.

Social Opportunities
Learning to swim can open up social opportunities for adults. Many communities have local swimming clubs or recreational swim leagues that adults can join to meet new people and participate in a fun and healthy activity.

Family Bonding
For adults with children, learning to swim can be a great way to bond with their kids. Swimming is a great family activity that everyone can enjoy together, and parents who know how to swim can better ensure their children’s safety in and around water.

Travel Opportunities
Finally, learning to swim can open up travel opportunities for adults. Many popular vacation destinations include swimming and water activities, and being able to swim can make these experiences more enjoyable and safer.

In conclusion, with the right instruction and guidance, it’s never too late for adults to learn how to swim, become a confident, skilled swimmer, and enjoy all the benefits that come with this valuable life skill. At Easy2Swim, we are committed to helping adults learn to swim and learn to enjoy water in a safe and responsible manner, and be better equipped to handle unexpected situations.

(a 1 hour class – 2 x 30 minute lessons back to back).

Most of our private lessons happen in the early or late afternoon, Monday to Thursday and on Saturdays around 12:30PM. We can be very flexible with our times, and will try to fit in with your schedule.
